Schizoaffective disorder

Overview

Concurrent prominent mood (manic or depressive) and schizophrenic symptoms, with psychotic symptoms present for ≥2 weeks in the ABSENCE of prominent mood symptoms at some point.

Recognise

  • Mood episode + schizophrenic symptoms in the same episode
  • The defining feature: ≥2 weeks of psychosis without mood symptoms
  • Bipolar and depressive subtypes

Red flags

  • Risk as per mania/depression and psychosis

Investigations

Clinical, longitudinal. Exclude mood disorder with psychosis and schizophrenia.
