Why this matters on day one

The Foundation curriculum is what you will actually be assessed against from August, and it is organised around three higher-level outcomes rather than a list of conditions. This one covers the clinical core, and progression through F1 depends on evidencing it.

What the domain requires

1. 1Assess and manage. Recognise and manage the acutely unwell patient, prescribe safely, perform procedures competently, and manage chronic disease and multimorbidity.
2. 2Prioritise. Hold and re-order a competing task list across a shift without losing the sick patient — the capability most specific to foundation practice.
3. 3Escalate. Know when you are out of your depth and act on it early, using a structured handover.
4. 4Deliver person-centred care. Including end-of-life care, and decisions about ceilings of treatment.

What evidencing it looks like

• Supervised learning events across acute and chronic presentations.
• The Foundation Programme required procedures, signed off.
• Evidence of managing a deteriorating patient, including the escalation.

What falls short

• Evidencing only straightforward cases.
• Leaving procedure sign-offs and SLEs to the final weeks of the placement.
