Why this matters on day one

You will be the person a medical student learns cannulation from within weeks. Teaching is a GMC duty, and it is also the fastest way to find the holes in your own understanding.

What the domain requires

1. 1Teach. Bedside teaching, case presentations and formal sessions. Set an objective, teach to it, and check whether it landed.
2. 2Supervise safely. Know what a student may do, observe rather than assume, and never delegate something you have not seen them do.
3. 3Give feedback that works. Specific, timely, behaviour-focused and actionable. "That was fine" teaches nothing.
4. 4Be a learner too. Seek feedback actively, and treat supervision as an opportunity rather than an assessment to survive.

What evidencing it looks like

• Teaching delivered with structured feedback from learners.
• Supervision of a student procedure, documented.
• A teaching qualification or course, where available.

What falls short

• Letting a student perform a procedure unobserved because you are busy.
• Feedback that is either uniformly positive or purely corrective.
• Teaching what you happen to know rather than what the learner needs.
